Language and deliberation

Conducting a deliberative process is not like buying in Amazon.com or Alibaba.com. Organizing deliberation or public discussion in languages your community is not completely comfortable with, will generate undesired asymmetries. In any community of the world deliberation is inclusive in its own «common» languages, exclusive in alien languages.

Our community love to discuss, and we do it in latoc languages (Spanish, Portuguese, Galician, Asturian...). Everyone of us is, at least, bilingual with two of them, some of us with more than two. So, we use latoc for deliberation: everyone can speak and write in his/her familiar language and to understand perfectly the others. Understanding perfectly any latoc language and to think in one of them, is a basic condition for taking part in the integration process.

Almost everyone in las Indias read on daily basis also in English, French and Italian. Some of us in German too. But using any of these languages for discussion would mean not only to add an extra cost to deliberation, but to accept a real handicap for expressing our ideas and experiences transmitting the information and emotions we want to transmit.

Finally, English is everything but neutral. Using English as «international» language reproduces and feeds the self-proclaimed centralizing role of the English speaking conversation... what really means, American and British media, its celebrities and its banalities.
